FO warns tourists of global terror threat
The Foreign Office has warned of a global terror threat to tourists due to British involvement in Iraq and Syria.
Its travel advice was updated for all destinations on Friday, responding to what it says is a ‘generalised threat’ rather than warnings of a specific attack.
The new advice comes after the UK national terror threat level was raised from ‘substantial’ to ‘severe’ in August, meaning an attack was ‘highly likely’.
It believes British travellers could be targeted by terrorists seeking revenge for UK air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants.
Parliament backed British participation in air strikes against IS extremists in Iraq in September, at the invitation of the Iraqi government.
A statement from the Foreign Office on Friday said: "There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria.
"You should be vigilant at this time."
The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Syria and the northern half of Iraq.
It warns tourists to Turkey to avoid any travel to within 10 km of the Syrian border, and all but essential travel to the southern provinces.
It said there is a risk of ‘indiscriminate’ attacks in places visited by tourists in the rest of the country.
The FO also advises against travel to much of Egypt beyond the popular Nile valley.
