Foreign Office issues warning about major Caribbean airline
Safety concerns have been raised about InselAir, one of the largest airlines in the Caribbean.
The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for destinations served by InselAir, including the USA, Jamaica and Colombia to include a warning about the Curacao-based airline, which carried around 1.4 million passengers last year.
It said that UK government staff have been advised to avoid travelling on InselAir due to safety concerns.
"The US and Netherlands authorities have prohibited their staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out. UK government officials have been told to do the same as a precaution," it said.
Insel Air operates 70 flights a day to 26 destinations, mainly in the Caribbean but it also flies to Miami and several locations in South America. It is planning to launch new services to Antigua, Barbados and Cali.
With a hub in Aruba, it operates 18 aircraft, mainly Fokkers and McDonnell Douglas and two Embraer Bandeirante.
It has interline partnerships with several international airlines, including Air Berlin, KLM and Air France.
