Foreign Office issues warning to tourists in Benidorm ahead of England match
Tourists in Benidorm have been warned to take care during and after Wednesday’s England v Croatia World Cup semi-final.
In particular, they have been told by the Foreign Office to ‘exercise caution’ around Rincon Loix, one of the resort’s newest areas, which is very popular with the Brits.
The update to the FCO travel advice for travellers to Spain follows recent public order incidents following other televised England football matches in Benidorm.
Spanish police clashed with England fans after both the England v Panama and England v Sweden matches.
Benidorm riot police rushed in after fans ambushed a car and smashed its windscreen while celebrating England’s 6-1 victory over Panama.
There were reports in the media that police, armed with riot shields and truncheons, fired rubber bullets in the crowd after the Sweden match.
The Foreign Office advice to fans for tomorrow night’s match, which kicks off at 8am Spanish time, said: "Given recent public order incidents following televised England football matches in Benidorm, you should exercise caution around the vicinity of Rinc-³n Loix during and after the England v Croatia World Cup match on Wednesday 11 July; if you’re in the area, you should follow the instructions and advice of the local authorities; strict controls on drinking alcohol in the street are in force and anti-social behaviour may lead to prosecution."
