Foreign Office restores Sri Lanka travel warning
The UK Foreign Office has reinstated its travel advisory for Sri Lanka. It warns against all but essential travel.
The South Asia nation faces its worst post-war economic crisis as it teeters on the edge of bankruptcy.
The Sri Lanka government has exhausted its foreign currency reserves to import essential goods and is in protracted bailout talks with the International Monetary Fund.
Sri Lanka is ‘experiencing a severe economic crisis which has led to shortages of basic necessities including medicines fuel and food.’
“There are daily power cuts due to electricity rationing. This has led to protests and violent unrest,” the FCDO said.
“Further protests, demonstrations, roadblocks and violent unrest could occur at short notice.”
TUI has again suspended Sri Lanka holidays due to the upgraded travel advisory
