The Foreign Office has asked anyone worried about friends or family members staying near Cancun to contact it following reports of a shooting in a nightclub about an hour’s drive away.

Five people have been killed in the shooting at the Blue Parrot club in the resort of Playa Del Carmen on the closing night of the BPM Festival.

The festival takes place in several venues across Playa Del Carmen, featuring more than 150 of the world’s top DJs, and is popular among tourists.

One Canadian, one American, two Mexicans and one Italian died.

A Scottish DJ, Jackmaster, who was playing at the festival, tweeted that someone entered the club, opened fire and killed four or five people, leaving many more injured.

The FCO updated its advice on Monday evening to say: "Although there are currently no reports of British casualties from this incident, if you’re worried about a friend or family member, contact the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 020 7008 1500."

Playa del Carmen and neaby Cancun are on the Mayan Riviera, a popular tourist area for both Europeans and North Americans,
