The Foreign Office has updated its advice for New Zealand after a state of emergency was declared in Christchurch following a wildfire in the area.

Over 1,000 people have been evacuated, one person is known to have died and 11 houses have burned down.

Firefighters have contained the fire and plan to let it burn itself out.

The FCO advice says: "A state of local emergency has been declared for Christchurch city and Selwyn district due to the current Port Hill fires. You can monitor the Christchurch civil defence emergency management website, the advice of the local authorities and social media for the latest updates."

The FCO is reminding travellers in the Wellington area that the British High Commission Offices in Wellington are temporarily closed and the High Commission is currently operating from the Australian High Commission, 72-76 Hobson Street.

British nationals in New Zealand who need assistance should telephone 04 924 2888.
