Foreign Office warns of airport and rail strikes across Spain

Holidaymakers travelling to Spain over the Easter break are being warned to expect flight and rail disruption due to a series of strikes.

Security workers have already begun an indefinite strike at Madrid Barajas Airport and workers at airports throughout the country are planning to strike on Easter Sunday and next Wednesday.

In an update to its travel advice for Spain, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said: "If you’re travelling during these times, you should prepare for the possibility of delays, allow additional time, and keep up to date with your airline on the status of your flight."

In a statement, easyJet said: "Due to ground handling strike action taking place in Spanish airports on 21st and 24th April, easyJet, like all airlines, is expecting some disruption to its flying programme.

"Whilst we are awaiting the publication of minimum service requirements, we advise all customers travelling during the period to check the status of their flights on our Flight Tracker.

"Although this is outside of our control, we would like to apologise to all our customers for any inconvenience and would like to reassure them we are doing all possible to minimise any disruption as a result of the industrial action".

Trains, including some long-distance services, could also be disrupted due to a strike by workers, who walked out for the first time today and are planning a second walkout on April 24. The FCO advised holidaymakers to contact the rail operator RENFE for further information.

A strike by Air Nostrum pilots, which was due to continue today and resume again on April 22, has been called off after their union reached an agreement with the airline.
