Forest fires still burning in California
More than a dozen people are now known to have been killed, with hundreds of houses destroyed, in wildfires that are ravaging southern California.
Ten major fires are currently burning in the south of the state, with San Diego being particularly badly affected along with San Bernadino, to the east of Los Angeles. Some carriers have cancelled flights into the region, and the Federal Aviation Administration’s control building in San Diego was evacuated because of the fires.
Some 250,000 acres of land have been burned by the fires, with the biggest fire burning nearly 100,000 alone. According to the online news provider Ananova, a man, who is believed to become lost while hunting and setting off a signal fire, has been arrested and could be charged.
