Free wi-fi now at Nigeria’s largest airports
Nigeria has switched on complimentary airport WiFi in a move aimed at upgrading the passenger experience and accelerating digital transformation across its aviation sector.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in partnership with telecom company MTN Nigeria, has rolled out free internet access at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 2 and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Both airports are among the busiest in Nigeria. In 2024 -latest available data-, Lagos handled around 6.8 million passengers across domestic and international services, nearly half of total traffic reported at Nigeria’s major airports. Abuja accommodated about 5.5 million passengers during the same year.
The service was officially launched a few days ago at MMIA Terminal 2 by FAAN Managing Director and CEO Olubunmi Kuku, represented at the event by Director of Airport Operations Captain Abdullahi Mahmood.
Kuku described the deployment as a significant step forward for Nigeria’s airport infrastructure, saying it sets a new standard for connectivity and customer service. She emphasized that in today’s digital era, airports must function as fully connected hubs rather than “offline islands.”
The initiative will soon expand to the MMIA Temporary Terminal, with further roll-outs planned for international gateways in Enugu, Port Harcourt and Kano over the next three months.
According to FAAN, the partnership highlights the power of public-private collaboration in modernizing critical infrastructure and supporting the country’s growing digital economy. Kuku said the new WiFi service reflects FAAN’s commitment to closing service gaps, boosting operational efficiency and elevating overall passenger satisfaction.
“This is more than just internet access,” she noted. “It’s a signal that Nigerian aviation is entering a new chapter focused on innovation, partnership and excellence.”
MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola, represented by Chief Enterprise Business Officer Lynda Saint-Nwafor, said the telecom provider will deliver a secure, reliable and seamless connection for travelers.
Airports, he noted, are vital gateways for business travelers, tourists, airport staff and service providers — all of whom increasingly rely on uninterrupted connectivity. The free WiFi will allow passengers to stay online while waiting to board, during layovers or immediately upon arrival.
MTN also plans on-site engagement campaigns in Lagos and Abuja over the coming weeks to promote awareness and encourage free WiFi use.
Other improvement projects at airports include a high-tech perimeter fence in Lagos, spanning about 14.6 km with CCTV, intrusion detection and a modern command center. The USD33 million investment will strengthen airport security and surveillance.
The Federal Executive Council also approved a USD475 million for a complete rebuild and upgrade of Lagos MMIA’s Terminal One and expansion of Terminal Two. It will be one of the largest single airport investments in Nigeria’s history.
