From Old Boys Clubs to Mancations
In the last issue’s Affinity column, we talked about girlfriend getaways so it is appropriate that we now turn our attention to the guys. Travel experts have identified four markets that are considered to be the hottest new travel trends: medical tourism, volunteer vacations, spa programs and guy-only trips, a.k.a. mancations.
The first three have been on the trend radar for some time; however, guys bonding with their best buds and taking off on the various groups’ brand of adventure has exploded onto the travel scene.
While the girls wallow in spa treatments and sip cocktails on the terrace, the guys are off to revive their passion for youthful play, putting a new spin on what guys do best – pal around with their buddies. Gals’ getaways are for being pampered and giving themselves special treats, while guys want to experience he-man, action-oriented activities.
Today’s women connect with their close-knit inner circle of friends who share mutual stresses and issues. In contrast, men, who also feel stressed, find their solace by reconnecting with close friends from the past. These pals often are school chums, old work buddies, former neighbors, men they served in the military with, and others.
It’s only been within the last few years that men only gatherings have thrown off the shackles of traditions in favor of celebrating kinship connections with wild abandon and on inspired travel adventures.
What once was a predictable bachelor party is now an adventuresome outing with focus on activities like golf, fine dining, extreme sports, wine appreciation and even spa treatments.
No more are the days of guzzling beer and grunting over endless hours of televised sports. Today’s guys are taking fishing trips to the remote fly-in waterways of Alaska; the Wednesday night poker game has moved to long weekends in Las Vegas; and traditional all-night bachelor parties are now multi-day recreation adventures in exotic destinations.
Jason Baker, head concierge at Wynn Las Vegas resort commented, “A lot of (men-only) groups come here just to escape.” In addition to making special gaming and event arrangements at the resort, Baker’s staff organizes kayak trips down the Colorado River, sky diving, racetrack driving lessons and other one-of-a-kind and unique activities for all male getaway groups. “The more activities
we make available to these groups, the more they want to do.” Many guys’ outings used to be for a two-day weekend and now have stretched to a four-night vacation.
