Fun and games in the air
In two separate bizarre incidents over the last week, air travel has shown itself to be scary with or without plastic cutlery. In Brisbane a court heard yesterday how a drunken French tourist with a fear of flying tried to open an Australia-bound jet passenger door in mid-flight to have a cigarette.
The French tourist was placed on a good behaviour bond after pleading guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court to endangering the safety of an aircraft. She was apprehended on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Brisbane on Saturday as she strolled towards the emergency exit with a cigarette and a lighter in her hands.
Her defence told the court the passenger had been terrified of flying and had taken sleeping tablets and alcohol before takeoff. Her husband was travelling on the flight with her.The couple are on a three week holiday in Queensland.
Last night in Sydney, a light plane had to be assisted to land at Mascot after becoming lost in thick cloud over the city. The pilot , with only visual navigation, radioed air traffic control to say he needed assistance. They used radar to find him a hole in the cover and he landed on the main runway with 20 minutes of fuel left.
