Japan is recovering after a second powerful quake hit the south-western island of Kyushu on the same day  a 7.8 earthquake struck Equador.

At least 11 people are still missing following the quakes in Japan which killed 41 people and wounded hundreds.

More than 272 people have been killed and thousands injured after a powerful 7.8 earthquake hit off the central coast of Ecuador on Saturday night, reports Reuters.

Its centre was 16 miles south-southeast of Muisne, a sparsely populated area of fishing ports that’s popular with tourists.

The Eloy Alfaro International Airport in Manta was closed after the control tower collapsed, injuring an air force official.

Guayaquil’s international airport was also closed because of a lack of communications.

An emergency had been declared in six of Ecuador’s worst hit provinces, while sporting events and concerts were cancelled until further notice nationwide.

The quake was felt across the border in Colombia and Peru briefly issued a tsunami warning.

In Japan some 180,000 people were set to spend a third night in temporary shelters, including cars and tents.

More than 62,000 homes remain without electricity and 300,000 homes have no water, Japanese media report.

The first earthquake on Thursday in the town of Mashiki, near Kumamoto city on the island of Kyushu, killed at least nine people and injured more than 250.

In the early hours of Saturday, a second earthquake hit causing huge damage to roads, bridges and tunnels.

Tours to the island have been suspended as the hunt for survivors continues.

China Southern Airlines and Air China announced they would offer full refunds or waive change fees on all routes to Fukuoka.

The 400-year old Kumamoto Castle, a popular tourist attraction, was also partially damaged by the twin earthquakes.
