Germanwings commits to ‘airports near the city’
Germanwings is adding more destinations out of its Cologne/Bonn base this summer.
The low cost carrier will announce the destinations in the next two weeks, but has hinted that it is expanding its services to Italy, and adding flights to the Iberian Peninsula and South East Europe.
Germanwings managing director, Dr Joachim Klein says the carrier will not follow the model of some other low cost carriers, which fly passengers to airports a long way from the city centre. He said: “We are committed to flying our passengers to the main airports near to the city. Milan airport means Milan, while Bergamo does not.”
Germanwings flies from Cologne/Bonn to Milan Malpensa airport, which is about 40 minutes by train from the city centre. Milan’s closest airport is Linate, which handles fewer flights and is about 25 minutes from the city centre by bus. It’s London airport is Stansted, which is 45 minutes from the city centre by train.
The new routes will start on 30 March. Germanwings says fares will continue to start at £13 including taxes and charges.
Germanwings currently offers flights out of Cologne/Bonn to Barcelona, Berlin, Istanbul, London Stansted, Madrid, Milan, Nice, Paris CDG, Rome, Vienna, and Zurich.
