Get rolling in Namibia’s five day African bike tour

Abenteuer Afrika Safaris, Namibia’s preeminent tour operator, offers a five-day biking tour of Damaraland, a spectacular area of exotic desert and granite mountains, black rhino and desert-adapted elephants, ancient plants and Stone-age rock engravings.

As the sun rises, a vehicle will transfer you to the Swakop River and the other-worldly Moon Landscape for a two- to three-hour morning cycle followed by a picnic lunch at Goanikontes. You will then be transported by vehicle to Spitzkoppe, known as Namibia’s “Matterhorn,” for its sudden rise out of the plateau.  To cycle to the campsite takes about two hours. Explore on foot the stunning – and to the San people, mysterious – surroundings of Spitzkoppe, and climb through strange rock formations, before settling down for a well-earned camp dinner.

The next day, after breakfast, enjoy an early morning one- to two-hour cycle on the way to the little town of Uis, where you will have lunch. You will then transfer by vehicle to the granite massif of Brandberg West, Namibia’s highest mountain, and the start of the Welwitschia Highway, named for living miniaturized fossil plants peculiar to the Namib. You will then cycle for two to four hours en route to the Ugab River and the Save the Rhino campsite to overnight.

Rise early for breakfast and cycling up the side of the Ugab River gorge into Damaraland, considered the most beautiful area of Namibia because the feldspar contained in its granite mountains creates landscapes of fiery pink and blood red as the setting sun reflects off the mineral After lunch, you will cycle over the Damara steppes to Gai-ais, a prehistoric settlement, where game can often be viewed at the local fountain. You will stay overnight at the Petrified Dunes Campsite, which affords breathtaking views of the Brandberg (“Fire Mountain”) glowing in the distance.

Following breakfast, is a four- to five-hour bike trip via Doros Crater to Twyfelfontein Lodge. (Twyfelfontein is a World Heritage Site). A picnic lunch will be enjoyed at Doros Crater. In the afternoon, you can visit the famous rock art of the San people, and the bizarre geological sites known as Burnt Mountain and The Organ Pipes. This evening will be spent either at Aba-Huab Camp site or at a bush camp alternative.

After breakfast you will be transferred to Swakopmund, Namibia’s thriving capital city. En route, take advantage of yet one more cycling adventure – either to see the White Lady – the most famous San painting – or simply cycle off-road in this beautiful area and let events unfold.

The price of US$1552.75* per person for two guests or US$1057.75* per person for four guests includes:  Professional tour guide (cycle guide); driver/assistant and vehicle; fuel; all accommodations and meals as indicated; all drinks including water, beer and wine; all camping materials including sleeping bags and pillows; good quality mountain bike; activities as described; and all entrance fees to parks.
