Girl’s death sparks safety fears of China theme park rides

Saturday, 08 Feb, 2017 0
The death of a young girl on an amusement park ride in China has sparked concern about safety oversight of the fast growing industry.

An initial investigation points to a faulty safety belt and safety bar after the girl was thrown from the ride at a Chongqing park.

The tragedy was caught on video which has sparked online debate about safety standards at China parks.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said it had ordered the suspension all Chaohua Park’s amusement rides to ‘eliminate hidden dangers.’

Similar rides throughout China will also be suspended pending further inspections, AQSIQ said.

The park has offered the equivalent of US$127,000 in compensation.

Local media said the ride passed a routine safety check in December.
