Gogo developing 5G inflight Wi-Fi

Friday, 30 May, 2019 0

Inflight internet provider Gogo is planning to launch 5G network connectivity for commercial aircraft by 2021.

It expects to launch 5G as terrestrial 5G services are rolled out and will be built on its existing infrastructure of more than 250 towers.

It will become available for passenger and business jets within continental North America.

The ground-to-air service will run alongside existing 3G and 4G networks which will serve as a backup for 5G.

"Gogo 5G is the next step in our technology evolution and is expected to deliver an unparalleled user experience," said Gogo CEO Oakleigh Thorne.

Airlines including Delta and United currently use Gogo’s ground-to-air WiFi network.

It launched the 2Ku satellite-based system in 2015.

5G is expected to significantly boost speed and coverage and operates 10 to 100 times faster than a cellular connection, it says.

Gogo said it will offer easy upgrade options for existing ground-to-air customers.
