Good news from airlines: fewer bumps

Sunday, 21 Dec, 2005 0

One aspect of airline flying has actually improved: your chances of getting bumped from a flight are the lowest in more than a decade.

Airlines bumped about 12 passengers per 10,000 from their scheduled flights, according to an USA TODAY analysis of the first nine months of this year.

“Government numbers show a steady decline in the rate of bumping over the past five years,” the newspaper says.

Fuller flights in recent months should have raised the levels of bumping. But declining rates and airline expertise in knowing how many no-shows have helped lead to lower rates, experts said.

There are also fewer no-shows, which industry-wide has fallen to about 12% of ticketed passengers, which is down from the 20% rate in the late 1990s.
