Government to pay Eurotunnel £33 million to settle legal battle

Monday, 03 Mar, 2019 0

Eurotunnel is to receive £33 million compensation from the government in an out of court settlement.

The cross-Channel train operator had sued the Department for Transport for awarding contracts to companies to provide extra ferry services for lorries in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Eurotunnel claimed the deals with Brittany Ferries, DFDS and Seaborne Freight, a start-up company with no ships, were handled in a ‘secretive’ way.

The £13.8 million deal with Seaborne was subsequently withdrawn after a financial backer pulled out.

Eurotunnel had argued that it should have been considered for one of the contracts as, unlike Seaborne, it has experience running a ferry service. Its operation, MyFerryLink, was closed in 2015.

As part of the settlement with the government, Eurotunnel has agreed to make some improvements to its terminal in Folkestone, including installing new scanners and changing traffic routing to ease congestion.
