Guernsey sets out timeline for easing travel restrictions
The Government of Guernsey has unveiled a timeline for removing travel restrictions to and from the Islands, with unrestricted travel access possible by early July.
Four cases of the ‘Kent Variant’ in late January were identified, which led to the introduction of lockdown measures.
These have been effective and Guernsey has not seen a new case of Covid-19 in the last 20 days.
All remaining restrictions on everyday island life, including social, educational and business, have been relaxed after coming out of lockdown on 22 March.
The Government of Guernsey also laid out its plans for removing border and travel restrictions in a plan dubbed the ‘Bailiwick Blueprint.’
It expects that all significant restrictions can be removed by early July.
This is linked to the Islands’ vaccine programme roll-out.
Ahead of this, Guernsey also intends to resume its categorisation of countries and regions, at the end of April, meaning lighter travel restrictions for people arriving from places with a low prevalence of the virus.
The Guernsey Government stressed all of the expected dates are subject to change as there are still uncertainties ahead, such as the possible emergence of new ‘Variants of Concern’ and the continued speed and success of the vaccination programme.
It says the timeframes set out are realistic, and more details will be announced if revisions are made.
Deputy Peter Ferbrache, Chief Minister of Guernsey said: "We are delighted to give both our local community and visitors some clarity on how we expect to move forward, including the full reopening of our borders. We know we are very fortunate in being able to enjoy life without restrictions domestically for much of the past year."
"That gives us confidence as we now begin taking real steps towards more open borders and welcoming in more visitors soon."
