Gun-smuggling reporter is arrested
UK: News of the World journalist questioned over alleged offences
A News of the World reporter who took guns aboard a jet to expose security at Heathrow airport has been arrested. As reported by News From Abroad, the journalist last week managed to board a charter flight at the airport, carrying a replica rifle and pistol.
A large photograph of the reporter, brandishing the two weapons, was published in last week’s edition of the Sunday newspaper. The catering company van driver who helped the reporter to get on to the plane has also been questioned by police; the pair are believed to have been quizzed about four suspected offences including possession of a dangerous article in an aerodrome. The van driver has been sacked.
A spokesman for the newspaper said: “The journalist was engaged in a legitimate exercise proving how easily a terrorist could breach security and smuggle dangerous weapons on an aircraft. This investigation was massively in the public interest.”
