More than half a million room nights have been cancelled by travellers on the Japanese island of Kyushu since two powerful earthquakes in mid-April.

Research by Kyodo News said 520,000 room nights, mainly in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures, were cancelled.

Two quakes with a magnitude 6.5 and 7.3 hit Kumamoto Prefecture on April 14 and 16, killing 49 people.

Hotels in Kumamoto saw about 146,000 cancellations while the Nagasaki prefectural government said bookings for more than 70,000 room nights were refunded.

Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures also saw a similar number of cancellations.

Prior to the quakes, the region had seen a sharp increase in visitor arrivals and was looking forward to a busy period at the beginning of May for the Golden Week holiday season
