Hawaii becomes last state to drop mask mandate
Hawaii’s mask mandate will end on March 25, marking the last US state to scrap compulsory mask wearing.
It comes a day after Puerto Rico said it is scrapping mask requirements.
On the same day Hawaii’s Safe Travels program officially expires.
“I want to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment to keeping our community safe. I know this is a milestone many have been waiting for,” Gov. David Ige tweeted.
“If we see another surge, we will be ready to reinstitute the mask policy if needed.”
Beyond March 25, Hawaii is still recommending masks be worn indoors in some settings, like in healthcare facilities, while ‘businesses can implement appropriate restrictions.’
Overall, Hawaii recorded 237,500 cases and more than 1,350 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
