Hawaiian carrier Mokulele Airlines adding Lanai flights

Hawaiian interisland carrier Mokulele Airlines is starting flights between Kahului, Maui and Lanai.

It will operate two roundtrips a day starting on June 17 with fares from $57 one way.

Having bagging a new owner recently and streamlined the business, the airline is looking to expand once again.

Mississippi based Southern Airways completed a deal to acquire Mokulele in February and then almost immediately cut the workforce by about 10%.

"When we purchased Mokulele just over 2 and a half months ago, we made a promise to the people of Hawaii that we would bring more aircrafts, newer aircrafts, more departures and more destinations than this airline has ever served," said Southern CEO Stan Little.

"The addition of Lanai City gives us yet another route from our growing Kahului hub."

It plans to announce further interisland routes later this year.

Mokulele was founded 25 years ago by Rebecca Inaba as the first airline established by a native Hawaiian woman.
