Heathrow strike suspended today but threat remains
A strike by more than 4,000 workers at Heathrow today (Tuesday) has been suspended.
Unite the union said the industrial action has been cancelled while workers vote on an improved pay offer.
It said it would not reveal the details of the improved offer until its members have had an opportunity to consider and vote on the new package.
But it warned that strikes scheduled for August 23 and 24 remain on the table until the result of the ballot is known.
A walk-out planned yesterday (Monday) was also cancelled at the last minute, but not before airlines had made contingency plans, cancelling flights or switching them from Heathrow to Gatwick.
Heathrow said it already has contingency plans in place for the strikes planned later this month.
"Whilst most flights will operate as scheduled, to ensure your comfort, safety and security during this time, we are working with our airline partners to consolidate and reduce the number of flights operating during the strike period," it said.
"Unfortunately, this does mean that some passengers will be moved onto different flights by their airlines. This is a difficult time for Heathrow, our airline partners, and above all our passengers, as the proposed strike action has been unreasonably designed to impact passengers taking well-deserved holidays. We apologise for any disruption to your journey, and appreciate your patience during this time.
"In the meantime, Heathrow remains committed to finding a solution with Unite to avoid further strike action."
