Holidaymakers offered chance to help local kids to read
Holidaymakers in Sandals resorts can now volunteer to help local children with their reading as part of the operator’s “voluntourism†programme.
The launch of the Reading Road Trip programme will see tourists helping improve the listening, reading and comprehension skills of 5-7 year olds in primary schools in Saint Lucia, Antigua, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica.
The two-hour programme is available to all guests of Sandals Resorts, Beaches Resorts or Grand Pineapple Beach Resorts aged eight and up from September to mid-June each Thursday. It costs adults $20, which covers transportation and supplies, but is free to children aged eight to 12. Holidaymakers are encouraged to bring along a new or gently used book to leave in the school library.
Sandals Resorts International CEO and President of the Sandals Foundation’s Board of Directors, Adam Stewart said: “The chance to give back has been a customer request for some time, so we are thrilled to finally be able to offer our guests the opportunity to take part in the work we consider so vitally important.
“It’s an extraordinary thing to connect with the people of a place; to know them and to make a real difference in their lives. This is our first step into developing programming that allows our guests to do just that.â€
