Holidaymakers warned as anti-tourism demos spread in Spain
British holidaymakers in Spain are being warned about the spread of anti-tourism demonstrations in resorts and cities.
Campaign group Arran Països Catalans has carried out protests in Barcelona, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands over the past two weeks and has said it will carry out more.
The group is angry that tourism hotspots are becoming overcrowded and local people are being priced out of the rental and housing markets.
The group has targeted a tourist bus in Barcelona as well as broken hotel windows and slashed tyres on rental bikes in the city.
On Majorca, demonstrators targeted a restaurant in Palma, carrying flare guns and yelling at tourists to ‘go home’.
Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy described the group as ‘extremists’.
A spokesperson for Arran defended its actions but has vowed to carry out more attacks.
