Honeymooner killed by hippo

A British tourist has been killed by a hippopotamus while on her honeymoon in southern Africa. According to a report in the Daily Express, 32-year-old Janice Simpson was killed instantly after the canoe she was in was attacked by the hippo, in the Okavango Delta, In Botswana. The beast reportedly overturned the boat and attacked the woman, slicing through her heart and lungs with its huge teeth. The couple had been married less than two weeks. One safari specialist told the newspaper that the danger of being attacked by a hippo was real but sometimes exaggerated. He said: “If you go to Africa there are, of course, dangers with elephants, hippos, lions and buffalos around, but nowadays guides are extremely well qualified and accidents are rare. You are more likely to get knocked down by a car on the high street than be killed by a hippo in the bush.” But another claimed that a lack of experienced guides was a problem; he reportedly told the Express: “If you look at the number of deaths, they are small. But in some parks, guides are not armed.”
