Hong Kong Disneyland losses widen

Hong Kong Disneyland has posted its second successive annual loss as it grapples with falling visitor numbers from mainland China.
Visitor numbers were down more than 10% to 6.1 million and losses widened to HKD171 million.
The percentage of mainland tourists also fell to 36% of total visitation, down from 41% in 2015.
"Tourism has been difficult in the region but visitor numbers and occupancy at Disneyland hotels improved in the second half of the financial year from the first half," said managing director Samuel Lau Wing-kee.
While visitors from the mainland fell more than 20%, Wing-Kee doesn’t believe Disney’s new Shanghai park is necessarily to blame.
"China’s market is big enough to accommodate two Disneylands," he said.
Hong Kong tourism in general is in the doldrums with a 4.5% drop in arrivals.
