Hong Kong Disneyland Resort axes New Year countdown party
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort has cancelled its planned New Year countdown party over fears public transport will be disrupted by anti-government protests.
It decided to scrap the Disney New Year’s Eve Countdown Party with protestors often targeting MTR lines since the demonstrations began six months ago.
"After evaluating the possible late night transportation situation, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort regrets to announce that the Disney New Year’s Eve Countdown Party on December 31 will be cancelled," the theme park resort said on its website.
Guests with bookings made through Disney will be refunded.
Disneyland’s party is one of Hong Kong’s largest countdown events but joins several other big ticket events to be scrapped.
These include the Wine & Dine Festival and the Formula E-Prix.
Hong Kong tourism board’s Lunar New Year parade will also be cancelled over possible unrest.
These cancellations are affecting Hong Kong’s credibility and its perception as a safe place for business and tourism, said tourism lawmaker Yiu Si-wing.
"They could wonder if the cancellations mean Hong Kong itself doesn’t have the confidence to host orderly events," Yiu said.
