Hong Kong again extended mandatory quarantine measures for inbound travellers at it battles to quell the spread of Covid-19.

The 14-day isolation period will be effective for all inbound travellers from the Chinese mainland, Macao, and Taiwan until July 7.

Mandatory quarantine for all other international visitors will remain effective until September 18, said Hong Kong health secretary Sophia Chan.

"The global coronavirus pandemic is unstable, there is still a need to control people’s movements," Chan said.

Hong Kong continues to see small clusters of cases but wants all economic activity to continue.

The government also extended the limit on public gatherings to eight people until June 18.

This measure is controversial and has been slammed by critics suspicious it is being used as a way to block peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations.

The SAR has so far reported just over 1,000 Covid-19 cases.
