Large areas of southern China, including Shanghai, remain on emergency alert due to a battering by typhoon Nida, which hit Hong Kong yesterday with strong winds and torrential rain.
The storm is reported to be losing strength as it travels across the mainland towards Guangzhou and Guangdong province, but authorities say it could still bring severe flooding.
In Hong Kong, hundreds of people are understood to have taken refuge in government shelters overnight, but officials ended their rainstorm alert at midday on Tuesday.
