Hong Kong – Singapore travel bubble now delayed until 2021

Hong Kong and Singapore have agreed to push back a travel bubble until 2021 with the former trying to contain a fourth wave of Covid infections.

HK’s Commerce and Economic Development Bureau said the travel bubble would be reviewed in ‘late December’ for a possible start in early 2021.

"The decision on a further deferral of the launch date of the air travel bubble was taken in view of the severity of the epidemic situation in Hong Kong, with the number of local cases of unknown sources increasing rapidly," it said.

The travel bubble would allow quarantine-free travel between the two destinations.

Since plans were first announced it had garnered huge interest with many flights already full.

The travel bubble was postponed last month just a day before it was due to begin.

Cathay Pacific had ‘overwhelming demand’ for travel.

"Travellers who have already made bookings on designated flights during December 2020 may wish to contact their airlines and adjust the itineraries," a Hong Kong government spokesperson said.

HK Chief Executive Carrie Lam urged people to stay home and avoid non-essential family gatherings.

"The next two weeks will be critical so unless necessary, I hope residents can stay at home, especially the elderly. People should avoid social gatherings even if at home," she said.
