Hopes fade for cruise ship survivors

Hopes of finding survivors from the Yangtze River cruise ship disaster are fading.

At least five have died after the ship capsized and hundreds are still missing.

The Eastern Star, carrying 458 people, was ‘caught in a cyclone and went down in minutes’ claims the captain who survived and is in police custody with the chief engineer, reports the BBC.

Some of the Chinese tourists on board were able to swim ashore but rescue workers took more than two hours to reach the ship.

According to the BBC, so far only a dozen people have been rescued, including an 85-year-old woman. It added that rescue efforts were being restricted by heavy rain and strong winds.

The ship, owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corporation, was sailing from the eastern city of Nanjing to Chongqing in the south-west, via the scenic Three Gorges, one of China’s premier tourist attractions.

The ship went down in deep water in the Damazhou section of the Yangtze in Jianli county, Hubei.
