Hotels offered a green carrot – that’s different
Hotels in Australia will be eligible for tax breaks for green buildings – but only if Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s Labor party retains power in next month’s federal election.
Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) managing director Christopher Brown has applauded the move, saying it illustrated “that product improvements affect not just the customer’s direct experience, but also the energy efficiency and sustainability of Australian tourismâ€.
“With our reliance on natural assets like the Great Barrier Reef and Kakadu, the tourism sector understands better than most the need to operate sustainably.â€
Brown said the proposed scheme provides the extra incentive to upgrade air conditioning systems, lighting and control systems “so that Australia’s commercial accommodation can compete with the best in the world for energy efficiencyâ€.
