Huge crowds expected for Concorde farewell

More than 250,000 people are expected to gather at Heathrow airport for the arrival of Concorde’s last commercial flight on 24 October.

As reported, the supersonic jet will fly for the last time after a 34-year career during which it has made around 50,000 flights and carried two and a half million passengers. According to The Guardian, grandstands will be set up at the airport for the event, while the event will be televised live on television.

British Airways’ vice president for North American sales told the newspaper that there was also a large crowd expected for a special send-off at New York’s JFK airport. He reportedly said: “From the reaction we have had over the last couple of weeks it is clear people in the US feel affection for Concorde.”

He added that many people had flown from around the world to get a seat on one of Concorde’s remaining few flights – including one couple who flew from London to New York on Concorde, immediately returning on a standard flight.
