Australia: Death of British tourist confirmed by Queensland police
Australian authorities have confirmed that human remains found on Fraser Island are those of missing British tourist David Eason.
As reported by News From Abroad, Mr Eason went missing on the island in March 2001 after failing to return to his tour group. Despite extensive searches, the body was not found until 14 April, west of the island’s Lake Wabby, near to where he was last seen.
There has been widespread speculation that Mr Eason had been attacked by dingoes, which are common on Fraser Island, as a young boy was mauled to death by the creatures just a week after the disappearance – even if some experts said it was unlikely the dogs would attack a fully-grown man.
A spokesman for Queensland police said the death had been referred to the coroner, and that it was being treated as non-suspicious.
