Hurricane Sandy Update: all major airlines waive cancellation/change fees, thousands of flights cancelled
STORM UPDATE:
5:03 PM sunday
As the Eastern Seaboard braces for the impact of Hurricane Sandy, upwards of 3,000 flights have been cancelled across the region and all major airlines flying into the affected area are offering waived change or cancellation fees.
Major Michael Bloomberg has closed the New York City public schools on Monday and has shuttered the public transportation system as of 7 PM this evening (Sunday).
He has also called for evacuation from low-lying coastal areas including Coney Island and the Far Rockaways.
Airlines are currently getting in as many scheduled flights as possible. Check with your airline before going to any airport in the hurricane path. Airport closings could occur as early as late Sunday evening if high winds and heavy rains begin in the JFK/LaGuardia region as expected.
Residual effects may include downed power lines and subsequent loss of power.
Regular updates will be supplied here by TravelMole UK in the event of power loss and/or evacuation here at our NY base.
