Hurricane Sandy Update: Storm makes landfall sooner than expected, power outages reported
Update, 3:00 PM, October 29
Hurricane Sandy is moving in faster than expected. Landfall is now expected about 8 PM this evening.
Experts are saying that widespread power outages are expected due to wind and flooding. Patches of power outages have already been reported in New Jersey, near the Hudson River.
The Conrad New York Hotel in Battery Park reports toTravelMole that it evacuated its guests yesterday to the Hilton Hotel in midtown (stay tuned for more on that and other hotel-related news).
Schools and public transportation will be closed on Tuesday.
Water is rising fast and wind is picking up.
Weather trackers are saying this is a wind and tide storm, not a rain storm. The wind is rising here minute by minute.
Stores are all shuttered and many have boarded up their windows. Sign of seriousness: even Mckey D’s is closed. No more Big Macs till after Sandy leaves.
One of the biggest stories here now is Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s insistence on city workers going to their jobs, regardless of the weather. Many of these city workers are furious at what they see is the Mayor putting them on the front lines of danger in order to look proactive.
