Iberia closing Miami base
Iberia Airlines is closing its so-called mini-hub at Miami International Airport.
The airline said the move was intended to reflect its “intention to operate direct flights to all of its priority markets.
The airline now has four planes serving operating out of Miami to serve seven destinations in Latin America.
Under a new plan, Iberia will operate direct from Spain to Guatemala and Panama, beginning 1 October.
Connecting flights to other destinations the airline now serves from Miami — San Jose, Cancun, San Pedro Sula, San Salvador and Managua – will be operated by “associated companies,” the airline said.
The carrier will reduce its daily flights to Miami from two to one, but will retain its twice-daily service from Madrid to New York, as well as daily flights to Chicago.
The airline said it is talking to other carriers about codeshare operations.
ATWOnline said the airline cited deteriorating operational efficiency and customer satisfaction in Miami. That was attributed to changes implemented after 9-11.
