Immigration staff went missing

The Home Office is said to be taking “very seriously” allegations that air passengers were waved through immigration after an international flight because there were no staff available.

According to The Times, investigations are being carried out at Leeds Bradford airport following the incident last Tuesday.

The newspaper reports that around 40 people arrived at the airport from Brussels, on a bmi flight that touched down around half an hour late.

Passengers then reportedly discovered that there were no staff on the immigration desks. A spokesman for bmi then reportedly tried to find an immigration officer but, when nobody appeared, advised passengers to collect their luggage and go.

One passenger is quoted as saying: “There were about 40 passengers on the aircraft. Some had filled in immigration cards indicating they had travelled from outside the EU. They could have come from anywhere and been on any kind of mission. What happened in that terminal was outrageous.”
