India extends suspension of international flights

Indian regulator the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has extended the suspension of international flights until mid-July.

The ban was due to expire at the end of June but has now been extended until July 15.

International cargo flights and repatriation services continue to be exempt.

So far there have been hundreds of flights to bring home Indians stranded in various counties in the Middle East, Europe and the US.

This is known as the Vande Bharat Mission repatriation program.

When regular scheduled international flights get the green light, it will likely start gradually on selected routes on a ‘case by case’ basis.

The Indian government is exploring air bridges with several counties such as the UK, Singapore, UAE and France, according to the civil aviation ministry.

Domestic services restarted in late May after a two-month lockdown.

The ministry has now said airlines can increase domestic capacity from the current 33% of normal pre-pandemic schedules to 45%.
