Indian Railways to open first pod hotel
Indian Railways plans to launch its first ever capsule-style hotel at Mumbai Central railway station.
Operator Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation plans to convert two waiting rooms at the station into a hotel with minimalist pods offering short-time or overnight stays.
It is targeting an opening by December 2020.
The first phase will have 30 pods divided in two categories – Classic and Suite.
The latter category will feature larger beds and space for two guests.
The pod hotel’s common areas will include bathrooms, a lounge and café.
The concept is still fairly new in India with the first standalone pod hotel launching in Andheri in 2017.
The tendering process has begun and construction will be completed within six months, IRCTC said.
