India’s tiger tourism restrictions remain – for now
India’s Supreme Court has extended for another month the ban on tiger tourism in the core reserves in the country.
But the central government has been asked by the court to work with stakeholders to frame new guidelines on ecotourism in the tiger reserves.
An interim ban on tourism in the core tiger areas was imposed on July 24 and will be reviewed again on September 27.
The Travel Operators’ for Tigers (TOFT) group said in a release, "If nothing else, the ban has been an effective catalyst for everyone to debate the issues associated with wildlife tourism and conservation practices, and help bring it to much needed national attention – and action."
Julian Matthews, chairman of TOFT, added, "I hope the relevant government agencies will now set out to consult widely on the guidelines with all states and stakeholders under whose domain these reserves exist.
"The results of this approach should be the very best guidelines to ensure renewed biodiversity protection, enhanced rural livelihoods and a revitalised and buoyant wildlife tourism industry, that can still be the best in the world."
