Indigenous tourism body chases overseas tourists

Indigenous Tourism Australia says it hopes to tap into the growing demand from overseas tourists to experience Indigenous culture and it has set up a new panel with the role of developing the Indigenous tourism industry in Australia.

The chairman of the panel, Democrats Senator Aden Ridgeway, says the potential of the Indigenous tourism sector has been largely ignored until now.

“This is a time I think to paint the mosaic so that Indigenous cultural tourism can become a sector in its own right and can provide for that growing demand particularly from overseas audiences,” he said.

“We need to do it I think – recognising that if we’re going to create jobs, if we’re going to create small businesses it has to start with growing this product.”

He says the group is not focused on geographic representation like the failed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).

“It’s an issue about making sure that you have the right skills mixes is the first priority as opposed to looking at geographical representation one of the things that we can say is that if you look at the ATSIC model for example which dealt with skills, sorry representation but it didn’t achieve the outcomes that most people expected.”
