Indonesia ferry disaster search called off
Indonesian authorities have wound down the search and rescue operation following a ferry accident near the island of Bali earlier this month.
The vessel sank more than two weeks ago and 16 people are still unaccounted for.
The National Search and Rescue Agency said the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry, which sank in the Bali Strait, was carrying 65 people.
“After 20 days, there were no further signs of victims, so in accordance with procedures, we officially ended the SAR operation,” said Nanang Sigit, SAR Mission Coordinator.
There were 30 survivors and 19 bodies were recovered.
Yesterday saw another ferry incident caused by an onboard fire.
Authorities confirmed three people have died.
The KM Barcelona 5 caught fire off the Sulawesi coast,
More than 500 were rescued of which many jumped into the water to escape the flames.
Coastguard boats were quickly on the scene fighting the fire.
The cause of the blaze is still unclear.
