Insurance firm scraps terrorism exclusion

An insurance firm has claimed to be among the first in the industry to scrap a terrorism exclusion clause from its travel policies.

InsureandGo said it will now cover travellers for personal possessions, travel delay and cancellation if they are caught up in terrorist attacks. Medical expenses and emergency assistance are already covered.

The move follows criticism earlier this year over stringent insurance policies which excluded acts of terrorism.

Director Perry Wilson said the bombs in Egypt, Bali and London show terrorism is now part of our lives.

“As a specialist we are constantly analysing the market to ensure that our policies are really meeting the needs of travellers today,” he said. “We also have a duty to ensure we are continually adding value to our policyholders.

“Previously we have excluded cover for personal possessions, delay and cancellation and have looked at these claims on a case by case basis.

“But we are altering our policies to provide further protection to policyholders directly affected by an act of terrorism.”

The new policy will cover destinations deemed safe by the Foreign Office, he added.

InsureandGo stressed it would not charge a premium for the additional cover.

“Prices will remain the same,” a spokeswoman said.
