Intrepid Travel launches ‘conservation and communities’ foundation
Intrepid Travel has launched a foundation to support community and conservation programs throughout Asia.
Intrepid says it has created ‘The Intrepid Foundation’ to enable travellers to more easily donate money to projects in Asia, in conjunction with CAF Australia (Charities Aid Foundation).
“The Intrepid Foundation is the most amazing project we have initiated”, says Darrell Wade, Intrepid’s co-founder and CEO. “We have always believed in giving back to the countries through which we travel and since we started the company, we have been involved in community and conservation work throughout the region. Our solid growth over the past several years now enables us to concentrate our efforts and increase this support through the Foundation.”
Intrepid seeded the Foundation with an initial contribution of $200,000 for 2003 and will continue to donate substantially in the months and years ahead. Within the Foundation are three different funds to which travellers can contribute.
The first is the Endowment Fund, the base capital investment from which interest earned can be distributed to various community aid projects.
The second fund is the Intrepid Partners Program through which Intrepid supports the work of non-government organisations such as The Fred Hollows Foundation, World Wildlife Fund, and CARE Australia, amongst others.
Finally, there is the Community Project Fund. Donations to this fund go to the work of grass-roots non-government organisations based in Asia and identified by Intrepid as making a valuable contribution to the local community. These include many small organisations or projects such as the KOTO Restaurant in Vietnam, set up to enable street children to gain vocational experience in the hospitality industry, and the Spring Bud Plan, a program designed to assist girls in poor areas of China to return to school.
