Invaders cleared from London City runway
Protesters have been cleared from the runway at London City Airport, but flights have yet to resume.
The airport said it would resume normal operations ‘as soon as possible’.
It advised passengers to contact their airlines before travelling to the airport.
Inbound flights have been diverted to Southend and Gatwick.
Police officers were called to the airport at about 5.40am after nine protesters from Black Lives Matter UK locked themselves together on the runway.
Scotland Yard said it was investigating claims they got onto the runway from the Thames.
They claimed to be protesting against the airport’s £344 million expansion, which was recently given the go ahead by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
Black Lives Matter claim the expansion will impact residents of nearby Newham and compound global warming, which they say affects black people more than white.
