Investigation launched into mid-air near miss over Mumbai
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been called in to probe another mid-air near miss in Indian skies.
Vistara and Air India jets came within 100 feet of a collision a week ago above Mumbai it was reported.
A combined 261 passengers were on the two planes.
The Vistara flight descended too low reports suggest, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) grounded both Vistara pilots pending the investigation.
Vistara however maintained the cockpit crew had correctly followed instructions by air traffic control.
"The safety of our customers and staff is of paramount importance to us and at Vistara we diligently follow all the safety regulations and guidelines. In this particular incident, the resolution advisory (RA) got triggered due to conflicting traffic," a vistara statement said.
The Vistara jet incursion forced the Air India flight to take evasive action and steer the plane to a safe altitude.
An Aviation source said possible impact was just ‘seconds away.’
"The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has started an investigation as both the carriers were just 100 feet away and were full with passengers," the official said.
