Is hosting a sports event worth it?

Do sports events really help a destination’s tourism?
With Delhi getting into hot water over unfinished facilities for the Commonwealth Games and Beijing still paying the price for its overdeveloping of hotels, it’s a question that needs addressing.
Travelmole and marketing specialists the Pangaea Network want to know whether you think that hosting a sporting event really does make a lasting difference to a destination’s tourism numbers.
We are conducting research amongst the international travel community on this issue and will present the results at a session of the Global Sports Industry Congress in London on November 1.
So let us know if you think South Africa is still reaping the rewards of hosting the FIFA World Cup and how you think Brazil will fare in four years time? Are we heading for a fall here in London, come 2012?
